Brain development delayed in ADHD, study shows

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) due to a delay in brain development or the result of complete deviation from typical development? In the current issue of Biological Psychiatry, Dr. Philip Shaw and colleagues present evidence for delay based on a study by the National Institutes of Health.

The cerebral cortex is the folded gray tissue that makes up the outermost portion of the brain, covering the brain's inner structures. This tissue has left and right hemispheres and is divided into lobes. Each lobe performs specific and vitally important functions, including attention, thought, language, and sensory processing.

Two dimensions of this structure are cortical thickness and cortical surface area, both of which mature during childhood as part of the normal developmental process. This group of scientists had previously found that the thickening process is delayed in children diagnosed with ADHD. So in this study, they set out to measure whether surface area development is similarly delayed.

They recruited 234 children with ADHD and 231 typically developing children and scanned each up to 4 times. The first scan was taken at about age 10, and the final scan was around age 17. Using advanced neuroimaging technology, they were able to map the trajectories of surface area development at over 80,000 points across the brain.

They found that the development of the cortical surface is delayed in frontal brain regions in children with ADHD. For example, the typically developing children attained 50% peak area in the right prefrontal cortex at a mean age of 12.7 years, whereas the ADHD children didn't reach this peak until 14.6 years of age.

"As other components of cortical development are also delayed, this suggests there is a global delay in ADHD in brain regions important for the control of action and attention," said Dr. Shaw, a clinician studying ADHD at the National Institute of Mental Health and first author of this study.

"These data highlight the importance of longitudinal approaches to brain structure," commented Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry. "Seeing a lag in brain development, we now need to try to understand the causes of this developmental delay in ADHD."

Dr Shaw agrees, adding that this finding "guides us to search for genes that control the timing of brain development in the disorder, opening up new targets for treatment."

Additional work expanding these measures into adulthood will also be important. Such data would help determine whether or when a degree of normalization occurs, or if these delays translate into long-lasting cortical deficits.

?Today?s Supernatural,? first single from Animal Collective?s upcoming album Centipede Hz.

It definitely embodies a more earth, psychedelic feel than anything on Merriweather Post Pavilion , but I can?t yet tell if I like it? I?m sure it will grow on me, most of Animal Collective is an acquired taste. That said, the first time I heard Feels, I was brought down upon my knees with disbelief that something could be so delightful and deep.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. Postal Service is bracing for a first-ever default on billions in payments due to the Treasury, adding to widening uncertainty about the mail agency's solvency as first-class letters plummet and Congress deadlocks on ways to stem the red ink.

With cash running perilously low, two legally required payments for future postal retirees' health benefits ? $5.5 billion due Wednesday, and another $5.6 billion due in September ? will be left unpaid, the mail agency said Monday. Postal officials said they also are studying whether they may need to delay other obligations. In the coming months, a $1.5 billion payment is due to the Labor Department for workers compensation, which for now it expects to make, as well as millions in interest payments to the Treasury.

The defaults won't stir any kind of catastrophe in day-to-day mail service. Post offices will stay open, mail trucks will run, employees will get paid, current retirees will get health benefits.

But a growing chorus of analysts labor unions and business customers are troubled by continuing losses that point to deeper, longer-term financial damage, as the mail agency finds it increasingly preoccupied with staving off immediate bankruptcy while Congress delays on a postal overhaul bill.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has described a "crisis of confidence" amid the mounting red ink that could lead even once-loyal customers to abandon use of the mail.

"I think for my generation it was a great asset ? if you had a letter or package and you needed it to get up to the North Pole, you knew it would be delivered," said Jim Husa, 87, of Lawrence, Mich., after stopping to mail letters recently at his local post office. Noting the mail agency's financial woes, he added: "Times have changed, and we old-timers know that. FedEx and UPS and the Internet seem to be making the Postal Service obsolete."

Banks are promoting electronic payments, citing in part the growing uncertainty of postal mail. The federal government will stop mailing paper checks starting next year for millions of people who receive Social Security and other benefits, paying via direct deposit or debit cards instead.

First-class mail volume, which has fallen 25 percent since 2006, is projected to drop another 30 percent by 2016.

Art Sackler, co-coordinator of the Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service, a group representing the private-sector mailing industry, said the payment defaults couldn't come at a worse time, as many major and mid-sized mailers are preparing their budgets for next year.

"The impact of the postal default may not be seen by the public, but it will be felt by the business community," he said. "Mailers will be increasingly wary about the stability of the Postal Service. The logical and likely move would be to divert more mail out of the system."

The Postal Service, an independent agency of government, does not receive taxpayer money for operations but it is subject to congressional control. It estimates that it is now losing $25 million a day, which includes projected savings it had expected to be accruing by now if Congress this spring had approved its five-year profitability plan. That plan would cut Saturday delivery, reduce low-volume postal facilities and end its obligation to pay more than $5 billion each year for future retiree health payments.

While the Senate passed a bill in April that provides an $11 billion cash infusion to help the mail agency avert a default, it also would delay many of the planned postal cuts for another year or two. The House remains stalled over a measure that allows for the aggressive cuts the Postal Service prefers; that's unlikely to move forward this year, partly due to concerns among rural lawmakers over cutbacks in their communities.

The Postal Service originally sought to close low-revenue post offices in rural areas to save money but after public opposition agreed to keep 13,000 open with shorter operating hours. The Postal Service also is delaying the closing of many mail processing centers, originally set to begin this spring. The estimated annual savings of $2.1 billion won't be realized until the full cuts are completed in late 2014.

The postal uncertainty offers opportunities for banks, which can save up to one-third of the cost of processing checks if payments are made electronically. JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. have been urging electronic transactions.

"This could be a watershed event to motivate consumers and businesses to stop writing checks," said Rodney Gardner, head of global receivables at Bank of America, who recently reviewed the topic at a conference with insurance companies.

The Postal Service, which releases third-quarter financial results next week, has projected a record $14.1 billion loss for the year. It expects to avoid bankruptcy in October only by defaulting on the two health prepayments, totaling $11.1 billion. It faces a cash crunch again next year.

Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, notes that the onerous health payment for future retirees ? something not required of any other government agency or private business ? is to blame for much of the post office's red ink. He faults Congress for mandating the payments in 2006, saying they force the post office every year into a "panic mode that absorbs energy and resources" rather than focusing on longer-term innovation.

"The word 'default' sounds ominous, but in reality this is a default on the part of Congress," Rolando said.

In 2007 and 2008, the Postal Service initially had profits of roughly $3 billion but fell into the red after making the health payments. In more recent years, it has suffered annual losses of $2 billion to $5 billion even after factoring out the health payments; by 2016, the mail agency expects to lose $21.3 billion a year, of which $5.8 billion will be caused by that payment.

Peter Nesvold, a financial analyst with Jefferies and Co., says the post office's financial future will depend on how Congress resolves its conflict over the mail agency's core mission. While the Postal Service is a business expected to stay afloat, it also has a legal obligation to provide uniform first-class mail service even to sparsely populated, far-flung areas of the U.S., all for the same price of a 45-cent postage stamp. UPS and FedEx don't deliver to those areas that are less profitable, contracting with the Postal Service to get the job done.

Linda Graham, a postmaster in Hope, Alaska, says she understands the Postal Service's dilemma. Her rural postal branch may see its hours reduced from eight to four hours a day. "I feel that right now the post office is really grasping to try to make things work. I mean, they're losing money," she said.

Graham acknowledges her postal branch could probably get by if it were open just 6 hours a day, but believes that a bigger cut would be "suicide" for the town because of the role it plays as a community gathering place. "That's a real concern. So I just tell people, write more letters, buy more stamps," she said.

Too Much Hype in the Mobile Health App World? | Barbara Ficarra ...

I sent the?following?announcement to 11,893 Digital Health group on LinkedIn?members on July 23, 2012:

Too Much Hype in the Mobile Health App World? | Barbara Ficarra in Huffington Post

Dear Digital Health group members,

While I always like to share with you relevant media coverage of the group and my efforts related to it (please do follow me on Twitter @Paul_Sonnier), a recent article by Barbara Ficarra, a journalist and founder of http://healthin30.com, is particularly insightful; in this case regarding the state of health apps. My sincere thanks to Barbara for mentioning the Digital Health group.

?Too Much Hype in the Mobile Health App World?? by Barbara Ficarra

Further indication of why this is such a great piece is the group members Barbara interviewed for it: Dr. Joe Kvedar and Dr. David Lee Scher. Dr. Kvedar, as most of you probably already know, is the Director of the Center for Connected Health and a fellow mentor of mine at Blueprint Health, the TechStars-affiliated startup accelerator program based in NYC that helps early stage healthcare companies get started. Dr. Scher is a consultant and senior medical advisor to Happtique, which is working to certify medical, health, and fitness apps.

As Barbara astutely points out, ?It doesn?t seem as if there is too much hype ? just little guidance. The push to move the mHealth app world forward may be in the power of consumers to clamor for health and wellness apps that are safe, reliable and trustworthy.?

I wholeheartedly agree that consumers can catalyze the digital health revolution. By enabling them to choose the right technological aids, they will be further empowered to improve their own health and make better healthcare-related decisions. This creates a powerful positive feedback loop between consumers and healthcare systems, which are also undergoing a major transformation due to the digital revolution.
Lastly, on a separate note, I wanted to update you on the results of the recent group poll, which has received 360 total votes so far.

What is the biggest human health benefit derived from using digital health solutions?

#1 ? Disease management ? 178 (49%)
#2 ? Disease prevention ? 111 (30%)
#3 ? Disease diagnosis ? 41 (11%)
#4 ? Disease prediction (especially genomics) ? 25 (6%)
#5 ? Reduced radiation exposure (imaging) ? 5 (1%)

Disease management obviously came out on top for the immediate benefits we?re seeing. There was also some great ensuing discussion. For a summary of my thoughts on the poll, please see my post on the Popper and Company blog:

?POLL RESULTS: What is the single greatest health benefit afforded by Digital Health solutions??

Thanks again and, if you derive value from the group, please tell your friends and colleagues about it. They can join here.

Best regards,
Paul Sonnier

3 Fiddles Farm, Bridger Canyon, Montana

On Saturday July 21, the Bike to Farm (click here to get the info)?gang rode up the Bridger Canyon to 3 Fiddles Farm. ?Week two of the Bike to Farm?rides brought in more riders and we enjoyed the sights and hills of riding up the canyon on a great day. ?3 Fiddles Farm is about 10 miles from town and sits at about 5,500 feet in elevation.

The owners of the farm are Matt and Karin Broughton, and this is the same farm that Justene and I volunteer at in trade for knowledge and some fresh food. ?Knowing that Karin and Matt are awesome farmers and so full of knowledge about the science of growing good food and the difference between organic and poisonous food and how poisonous food is being linked back to an accumulative amount of health problems and how supporting the local economy by way of eating locally grown food will improve not only the local?(and national)?economy but cure more than half those accumulative health problems and solve a ton of environmental problems at the same time,,,,, and cost us (the so called vote) less money, ?is something that Justene and I are sure will make an amazing farm tour. (thanks for blowing our minds again M & K)

After the brief introduction of bikers to farmers, the Broughtons lead us out in their immaculate field of 240 varieties of vegetables; including patches with 7,000 bulbs of garlic, 28 varieties of tomatoes, 22 kinds of peppers, perfect rows of onions, carrots, peas, kale, lettuce,,,,,, ?It's enough to make a full man hungry, and in the middle of all this "here's how you grow good food, and grow good food well, and how it's changed our lives and can change your life too.... people started to get this feeling of, "wow, this is awesome."

Standing there I ?really began to think about the weight of the words Matt and Karin were saying; and this was not the first time I've heard them both get going about the local food issue, and how it relates to everything greener in our world today. ?In fact I love it when either one them starts talking passionately about food and farming and all the bull-stack (big ag. dirty governments, and the shit storms of Monsanto) going on in the world. ?This is one of the reason the Sweet-Bangss get along so well with the Broughtons; we like to speak the same language. ?For us, Justene and I are so happy to have friends like Karin and Matt and we know how fortunate we are to be able to get a working education from them as well.

As I stood there considering how much local food I consume I started to think, wow I'm not at all a locavore. ?But that would be awesome if I was, or if even half the food I eat was locally sourced. Even though I know food comes from farms and not made in the grocery store, I don't know who grows the food I eat, and this idea of really getting to know my farmer seemed to start to sink in.

Smart and obvious, the idea that the person growing my food should be someone I know made me feel funny inside. ?Is this how disconnect to our food we really are? When the idea of meeting the people that grow the food we eat, is a little funny, and strange. ?Why should I meet my farmer? I ask myself.

If not for anything else than, maybe because I need to heal my relationship with food. This relationship to food is also my relationship to the world around me and the environment, it's also the relationship I have to myself; the insides of myself, my health, my fitness level, and my peace of mind (or lack there of). Simply knowing where my food comes from, and knowing it's fresh and poison free doesn't sound like a difficult thing when I start to think about things a little. ?Trouble is, with all the distractions in daily life, (tabloids, bike races, personal dramas, jobs, money,,, and buying things I don't need) my thoughts get stolen away from how sexy fresh veggies are. ?Round and curvaceous, veggies are the sexiest foods available. ?They're alive and colourful, yet I forget about them all the time, as I pass by billboard after billboard of fast food and fake superstars.

Thanks to everyone who came out for last weeks ride. ?We'll keep doing this as long as we have your support. ?Thanks Bozeman.....

The then-Chad Ochocinco when he was with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009. He had changed his name the year before. Now, he's back to being Chad Johnson.

Chad Ochocinco has been deep-sixed.

After unofficially changing his name (but not his @ochocinco Twitter handle) back to what it used to be, the Miami Dolphins' No. 85 officially once again became Chad Johnson today.

"The main reason behind the name change was due to his marriage to Evelyn Lozada," it says at the OchoCinco News Network (and it must be true because @ochocinco points you there). "The couple preferred Evelyn's last name to be a real name and not the fun 'Ochocinco' character we have come to love."

USA Today's The Huddle blog says the wide receiver "reclaimed his given name in a Fort Lauderdale courthouse Monday." Now, the blog wonders, will he regain his form? It picked apart his average season numbers:

? "As Chad Johnson (7 seasons): 80 rec., 1,195 yards, 7 TDs."

? "As Chad Ochocinco (4 seasons): 52 rec., 674 yards, 5 TDs."

According to NFL.com, it cost Ochocinco ... er, Johnson ... cuatrocientos un dolar ($401) to become himself again. By the way, NFL.com hasn't totally caught up with the news yet. There's no "Chad Johnson" in its player archives at this moment. But "Chad Ochocinco" is there.

Now, we turn our eyes toward the NBA's Metta World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest).

Treasury pressure on climate goal

The Chancellor has demanded that the Energy Secretary Ed Davey abandon the UK's pathway towards climate targets.

In a leaked letter, George Osborne says renewables are too expensive and suggests expanding plans for gas-fired generation.

The government's adviser, the Climate Change Committee, says this will cause the UK to miss its 2030 climate goals.

The CCC warns that with volatile gas prices, consumers could end up paying more for electricity, not less.

The demands are laid out in a letter seen by BBC News.

The Draft Energy Bill in the early stages of Parliament aims to keep the lights on whilst meet government goals on climate change.

The CCC advises that in order to meet the goal of an 80% cut in CO2 by 2050 the government needs to have almost all electricity produced by low-carbon sources by 2030.

In his letter, dated 9 July, the Chancellor tells the Liberal Democrat Energy Secretary to give up that ambition and explicitly state that gas will play a core part in generation by 2030.

He writes: "We need to set out an approach which puts costs to consumers at the heart. (We should be) limiting support for low-carbon generation to a level the country can afford.

"We should commit publicly to ensuring that British consumers will be able to get benefits if the price of gas falls."

The Treasury is banking on advice that gas-fired electricity will remain cheaper than renewables, but this is hotly debated. The CCC and the regulator Ofgem warn that high gas prices would force costs up.

The CCC says a strategy focusing on renewables offers carbon benefits as well as insulating consumers from spikes in gas prices.

Mr Osborne's demands are made as part of an ongoing negotiation between Treasury and DECC over consumer subsidies for onshore wind. Mr Osborne says he will agree to Mr Davey's suggestion of a 10% cut in subsidy, but only if his other stipulations are met.

They include an insistence that the onshore subsidies are reviewed within this Parliament. Industry spokesmen say this will deter investors in wind who've already been spooked by government delays in policy.

Another demand is that government takes powers to close down feed-in-tariffs.

David Kennedy, chief executive of the CCC, told BBC News: "This would all lead to a second dash for gas. This would be incompatible with the government's climate change goals."

Environment groups have reacted furiously to the wish-list. Downing Street, Treasury and DECC have declined to comment on the row.

The Treasury is in a long-standing dispute with the Energy Select Committee over its influence on policy. MPs have asked Treasury ministers to give evidence on the Energy Bill but they have refused.

Back-bench Conservatives opposed to wind farms in the countryside are reported to have been lobbying Mr Osborne.

Joss Garman from campaign group Greenpeace tweeted: "Osborne's position means he's exposed to claim he's putting partisan politics before jobs & investment."

James Murray, editor of BusinessGreen.com said: "Make no mistake this is an all-out assault on the entire green energy sector."

The extensive coverage of AAA covers every mile of road from metropolitan areas to the remote wilderness in the United States.

All an AAA member needs to do is dial a phone number and show the responding agent their membership card.

AAA selects and approves auto repair firms through its Approved Auto Repair Program. The certification allows travelers to find an approved car repair company after an emergency. These companies are required to follow AAA regulations. This can keep travelers from being taken advantage of when traveling in an unfamiliar region. Why did Neanderthals have such humongous right arms? (+video)

An analysis of Neanderthal bones indicates that they had disproportionately huge biceps and triceps on their right arms, and that spear thrusting does not seem to fully account for their lopsided muscles.?

The unusually powerful right arms of Neanderthals may not be due to a spear-hunting life as once suggested, but rather one often spent scraping animal skins for clothes and shelters, researchers say.

Interesting experiement video from BBC science show 'Neanderthal: The Rebirth'.

The Neanderthals are our closest known extinct relatives, who were probably less brutish and more like modern humans than commonly portrayed. Their brains were at least as large as ours. They controlled fire, expertly made stone tools, were proficient hunters, lived in complex social groups, buried their dead, and perhaps artfully wore feathers. Genetic research even suggests they interbred with modern humans.

Neanderthals apparently had unusually strong right arms, judging by their right humerus ? the long arm bone underlying the biceps and triceps ? which often boasted protrusions with which to attach powerful muscles.

"Neanderthals have really interesting upper bodies," researcher Colin Shaw, a biological anthropologist at the University of Cambridge in England, told LiveScience. "If you and I are both right-handed, you'd expect 4 to 13 percent asymmetry between our arms. Neanderthals have up to 50 percent or more asymmetry. They were doing something with their dominant arms that were either more intense or repetitive or both than we do today. The only population of modern people that we see who are similar are tennis players, who hit tennis balls many, many years aggressively." [Top 10 Mysteries of the First Humans]

Scientists had suggested these arms may have grown strong through regular underhanded spear-thrusting. "We thought to test that idea," Shaw said.

Shaw, along with colleagues at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Oxford, took measured electrical activity in the muscles of 13 right-handed men as they performed three different spear-thrusting tasks ? single thrusts followed by rapid withdrawals, repeated strikes, and strikes followed by pushing of the spear forward. They also analyzed the men as they carried out four different scraping tasks on carpets ? hacking, pushing and two kinds of pulling.

The experiments were done on men because most Neanderthal skeletons analyzed by scientists have been male. Female skeletons do show the asymmetry, but the small number of specimens makes it tough to say for sure whether Neanderthal females had uneven arms, too.

The researchers found that spear-thrusting led to significantly higher muscle activity on the left side of the body than on the right, opposite to what is seen in Neanderthal fossils.

"Spear-thrusting did not appear to explain the mystery," Shaw said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The movie industry grappled Friday with the deadly Colorado shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," as one of the most anticipated films in years became enmeshed with a horrifying tragedy.

The shooting, which killed 12 and left nearly 60 injured in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater, reverberated through Hollywood and upended carefully laid plans for the global release of "The Dark Knight Rises." Warner Bros. quickly canceled a premiere planned for Paris and canceled press interviews in France.

"Warner Bros. and the filmmakers are deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident," read a statement from Warner Bros. "We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the victims, their loved ones and those affected by this tragedy."

New York City's police commissioner said he was told the gunman had painted his hair red and called himself the Joker ? Batman's nemesis ? but Aurora police would not confirm that.

The studio rushed to react to the tragedy. Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., said he had been up since 4 a.m. making calls.

"Everybody is very saddened by the event. We were obviously looking for a very happy occasion for us," Fellman said. "It's a difficult way to begin. We're just more concerned now with the well-being of those that were injured, of course."

The studio had no further comment on whether screenings might be canceled or precautions taken. Director Christopher Nolan issued a statement on behalf of the cast and crew of the film, expressing their "profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy."

"I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie," said Nolan. "I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theater is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me.

"Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

Warner Bros. did move to pull trailers for its upcoming movie "Gangster Squad" from showings of "The Dark Knight Rises." The trailer of the film, which stars Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling in a ruthless war between '40s Los Angeles police and the mob, includes a scene of mobsters firing into a movie theater from behind the screen.

A person familiar with what was shown at the Aurora theater said the trailer did not play there. The person did not want to be identified because the person was not authorized to speak on the matter.

Cinemark Holdings Inc., the chain that owns the theater where the shooting happened, said it was working closely with local law enforcement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and loved ones, our employees, and the Aurora community," the company said.

Movie theaters around the country continued Friday showings of the film as planned, though some were stepping up security and conducting bag searches. New York police commissioner Raymond Kelly said the city was providing extra security in New York theaters playing "The Dark Knight Rises" ''as a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons."

In the wake of the shooting, "The Dark Knight Rises" and the earlier Batman films, with their dark themes and emphasis on terrorism, were sure to be heavily scrutinized. The practice of midnight screenings for eagerly anticipated blockbusters, too, could come into question.

Kelly said that the suspected gunman, James Holmes, had his hair painted red and identified himself to authorities saying he was the Joker. Heath Ledger played the Joker in the previous Batman installment, "The Dark Knight," although his hair was colored green. Ledger died in 2008 from a toxic combination of prescription drugs before the film was released.

"I don't know if James Holmes cared deeply about Batman," film critic Roger Ebert wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times. "I suspect he cared deeply about seeing himself on the news."

The National Association of Theatre Owners issued a statement offering their "hearts and prayers" to the victims. The association said, "Guest safety is, and will continue to be a priority for theater owners," adding that the group would work closely with law enforcement and review security procedures.

"We share the shock and sadness of everyone in the motion picture community at the news of this terrible event," said former Sen. Chris Dodd, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America. "We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the victims, their loved ones and all those affected by this tragedy."

"The Dark Knight Rises" had expectations of being one of the biggest weekend openings ever. Its midnight screenings earned $30.6 million, Warner Bros. said Friday. That's the second-best midnight opening ever, behind $43.5 million for the "Harry Potter" finale. "The Dark Knight" earned a then-record $158.4 million in its first three days, including $18.5 million from midnight screenings.

The PG-13 film played in 3,825 theaters domestically in the midnight screenings, expanding to 4,404 cinemas nationwide Friday. Many showings on the weekend were sold out in advance.

Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for Hollywood.com who specializes in box office, declined to speculate on an effect the tragedy might have on the film over the weekend, saying it was too soon to estimate. But some moviegoers were already rethinking their plans.

Christine Cooley, who works for the University of Florida at a campus facility near Tampa, Fla., said she and her 15-year-old daughter were stunned by the TV coverage of the shooting Friday morning.

"Her immediate reaction was 'I'm never going to the movie theater again. Why should I go somewhere where I'm looking over my shoulder worrying that someone is going to come in and harm us when I can wait six months and watch it in the safety of my own home?'"

Cooley said she tried to explain to her daughter that it was an isolated incident, "but I see where she's coming from. Why put yourself in harm's way?"

Others were undeterred.

"Just seem like another day at the movies," said Jimmie Baker, 40, of Harlem, N.Y., at a theater in Times Square.

Andrew Bross, 22, of Livingston, N.J., returned Friday to watch "The Dark Knight Rises" for the second time in 12 hours.

"I go to the movies every week," he said. "I'm going to keep going. I'm not going to let it stop me one bit."

Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of "Lost," said he was going to see the film Friday night and suggested a modest tribute: a minute of silence as the end credit roll.

I just finished reading an interesting blog post from Africa is a Country ?http://africasacountry.com/2012/07/16/five-alternative-filmmaking-collectives/. Although the post dealt with a specific set of films, it made me think of how film-making has changed over-all.

Everything is digital -?with the advancements made on the digital front a lot of ?new? films are being shot entirely on a digital format. The superior 2010 film Monsters was made with a two person crew ?they used ?off the shelf? $8,400 cameras, editors, digital effects programs and other ?common? software programs. Monsters, besides being an entirely ?digital? film also ?could be labelled the zenith of ?guerilla? film-making.

The film-makers travelled to each location and filmed quite a lot of the time without any local authority?s permission. The ?extras? were not ?actors? but real people who happened to be in the area where they were filming. The two film crew members, would then edit the day?s footage in their hotel room at night.

Written and directed by?Gareth Edwards, who up to this point was better known as a documentary film-maker, Monsters is his first venture into the ?feature-length arena. The script he wrote had little to no dialogue in it. The scenes in the film with the two protagonists are mostly improvised rather than scripted. Amazingly this seems to work in making the film seem more believable.

The film is about two Americans who are trapped in Mexico by a quarantine. The Americans,?Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy) and?Samantha Wynden (Whitney Able) spend the entire film trying to get back to US soil and dodging ?alien monsters, opportunistic people and the elements.

Kaulder is actually in Mexico on an assignment. Wynden?s father has hired him to find her and bring her home. Wynden is a sort of ?Greenpeace? ?Save the world? type and she is initially reluctant to leave the alien infested Mexican/American border.

The film-makers help sell their film and their aliens by deciding to make them huge. Shots in the film ?featuring? the aliens show us enormous legs or trunks and refrain from showing us the actual bodies of the aliens till the end of the film.

The sets and the actors look gritty and real. That director Edwards has a background in documentaries this is evident from the very first frame of the film. Monsters looks and feels like a documentary. We feel like a fly on the wall watching these two protagonists interact with their surroundings and each other.

McNairy and Able were dating during the making of this film and are now married, an interesting fact that helps to explain their characters interaction with each other in the film.

Digital only films are increasingly becoming the medium of choice by new film-makers. These digital films look good and apparently the ?run of the mill? editing programs on the market are very good, because the editing in most cases is almost flawless. Asian cinema has been making ?mainstream? films digitally for sometime now.

Not too long ago actor Gary Oldman made a music video filmed entirely on a mobile (cell) phone. In 2009 Juliet Landau filmed the entire process for a short documentary entitled?Take Flight: Gary Oldman Directs Chutzpah. Intended as a no frills look at the filming process it looks instead at the creativity and thought process of Oldman himself. It also show how the film medium can be captured with a device as simple as a mobile phone and still look impressive.

A lot of the filming community are mourning the new trend of digital film making. They have gone on record as saying that digital films are more transient than traditionally made films. That may well be true, but without the option of digitally made films, little gems like Monsters would never be made. And what a shame that would be.
