Mom hit by lightning felt her 'legs on fire'

By Jennifer Reeves, NBCMiami.com

For the Deas family of Florida, a little stroll to the Toys ?R? Us became an ordeal they will never forget.

?At first I thought it was a car bomb. I mean, that's the way it felt. I?m like, am I in Iraq or something?? Donna Deas said. ?When I grabbed the baby and I?m coming out of the truck, (there was) a big explosion. And I could feel my legs on fire.?

The lightning struck a tree in the Hialeah, Fla.,?parking lot on March 15, just a few feet from where Deas and her family were standing. Donna was able to lay baby Haley in the truck just in time, before she and her husband James felt the shock, knocking them both out.

?My husband fell on the ground. I'm telling him, ?Don't move, don't move. Just wait, just wait,?? Donna Deas recalled.

For more, visit NBCMiami.com

She said her legs were completely paralyzed for 20 to 30 minutes after the strike. But fortunately her baby was inside the truck and not a few feet away, she said.

?Thank God that baby didn't make it to that stroller or she would have been zapped,? she said, pointing at it.

Florida is known as the lightning capital of the United States, with more than 500 people injured by lightning each year.

?It wasn't raining or lightning and thundering,? Deas said. ?It was just overcast and it was just bam, it was like in a split second.?

Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from the actual storm, even where it's not raining.

?I know one thing,? Deas said. ?When it?s raining outside, I'm staying home.?

The National Weather Service says that if you find yourself outside in a thunderstorm, get inside a safe building or vehicle as fast as possible.

It says a safe building is one that is fully enclosed and has plumbing or wiring. Once inside, stay away from showers, sinks and bathtubs, as well as televisions, computers and other electronic equipment.

A safe vehicle ?is any full enclosed metal-topped vehicle? such as a car, minivan, bus or truck with a hard top. When inside, do not use electronic devices such as the radio during a storm.

Do not take shelter under trees, and stay inside until 30 minutes after you hear the last thunder.

Video: Getting to the moon on drops of fuel

Thursday, March 29, 2012

The first prototype of a new, ultra-compact motor that will allow small satellites to journey beyond Earth's orbit is just making its way out of the EPFL laboratories where it was built. The goal of the micro motor: to drastically reduce the cost of space exploration.

Imagine reaching the Moon using just a tenth of a liter of fuel. With their ionic motor, MicroThrust, EPFL scientists and their European partners are making this a reality and ushering in a new era of low-cost space exploration. The complete thruster weighs just a few hundred grams and is specifically designed to propel small (1-100 kg) satellites, which it enables to change orbit around the Earth and even voyage to more distant destinations ? functions typically possible only for large, expensive spacecraft. The just-released prototype is expected to employed on CleanSpace One, a satellite under development at EPFL that is designed to clean up space debris, and on OLFAR, a swarm of Dutch nanosatellites that will record ultra-low radio-frequency signals on the far side of the Moon.

The motor, designed to be mounted on satellites as small as 10x10x10 cm3, is extremely compact but highly efficient. The prototype weighs only about 200 grams, including the fuel and control electronics.

"At the moment, nanosatellites are stuck in their orbits. Our goal is to set them free," explains Herbert Shea, coordinator of the European MicroThrust project and director of EPFL's Microsystems for Space Technologies Laboratory.

Small satellites are all the rage right now because their manufacturing and launch costs are relatively low ? about half a million dollars, compared to conventional satellites that run into the hundreds of millions. But nanosatellites currently lack an efficient propulsion system that would render them truly autonomous and thus able to carry out exploration or observation missions.

A motor that doesn't burn fuel

Instead of a combustible fuel, the new mini motor runs on an "ionic" liquid, in this case the chemical compound EMI-BF4, which is used as a solvent and an electrolyte. It is composed of electrically charged molecules (like ordinary table salt) called ions, except that this compound is liquid at room temperature. The ions are extracted from the liquid and then ejected by means of an electric field to generate thrust. This is the principle behind the ionic motor: fuel is not burned, it is expelled.

In the motor developed at EPFL, the flow of ions is emitted from an array of tiny silicon nozzles ? over 1,000 per square centimeter. The fuel is first guided by capillary action from a reservoir to the extremity of the micro-nozzles, where the ions are then extracted by an electrode held at 1,000 volts, accelerated, and finally emitted out the back of the satellite. The polarity of the electric field is reversed every second, so that all the ions ? positive and negative ? are ejected.

SystematIC Design, a MicroThrust project partner, designed the motor's electrical system. The ion ejection system requires a high electrical voltage, but the available energy aboard a 1-liter nanosatellite is limited to a few small solar cells ? in practice, about four watts of power. The Dutch company was able to develop a system that overcame this difficulty.

Cruising speed: 40,000 km per hour

After six months of acceleration, the microsatellite's speed increases from 24,000 km/h, its launch speed, to 42,000 km/h. The acceleration is only about a tenth of a millimeter per square second, which translates into 0-100 km/h in 77 hours. But in space, where there is no friction to impede motion, gentle but steady acceleration is the way to go.

"We calculated that in order to reach lunar orbit, a 1-kg nanosatellite with our motor would travel for about six months and consume 100 milliliters of fuel," explains Muriel Richard, a scientist in EPFL's Swiss Space Center.

The ionic motor will power CleanSpace One ? a nanosatellite whose mission is to tidy up space by grabbing space debris and pulling it into the Earth's atmosphere to be safely incinerated. According to the Swiss Space Center, CleanSpace One will take two to three months and more than 1,000 terrestrial revolutions to reach one of its targets, the decommissioned Swisscube cubesat or Tlsat-1 cubesat. And the scientists have just over a year to finalize their system.

"Our prototype still has a few flow problems at the nozzle extremities, which could cause short-circuits," explains Shea. The prototype was developed in the context of a European project coordinated by EPFL and involved Queen Mary and Westfield College in the UK, the Dutch companies TNO and SystematIC Design B.V., and Nanospace AB in Sweden.

Japan partly opening 3 towns in nuclear no-go zone

(AP) ? Japan is partly opening areas just inside the evacuation zone around its leaking nuclear power plant for the first time since last year's disasters.

The 20-kilometer (12-mile) perimeter around the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant remains largely intact. But Friday's announcement from the goverment means about 16,000 of Japan's 100,000 nuclear evacuees could be allowed to return home.

Towns in the least contaminated areas of the no-go zone will be rearranged into three categories based on contamination levels.

The new arrangement takes effect in Kawauchi and Tamura starting Sunday and Minamisoma in mid-April, affecting about 16,000 residents. Parts of each town will remain off-limits because of higher exposure levels, and eight other municipalities in the same low-contamination category have not yet decided which areas should be reopened.

Most residents, however, are waiting until the area is further decontaminated and infrastructure restored.

Cuba dissident identifies papal Mass protester

(AP) ? A leading Cuban dissident has identified the mystery man who yelled anti-government slogans just before a Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI this week before being hustled away by security agents.

Jose Daniel Ferrer told The Associated Press that the protester's name is Andres Carrion Alvarez, and identified him as a 38-year-old resident of the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba. Ferrer said the man was still in custody Friday.

The protester shouted "Down with the Revolution! Down with the dictatorship!" near journalists at the Mass at Santiago's crowded Revolution Plaza on Monday. Video of the incident showed him being hit by an apparent first-aid worker wearing a white T-shirt with a large red cross, before they were separated. Security agents quickly took him away.

Ferrer is the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba opposition group in Santiago. He says Carrion approached another member of the group in recent weeks and expressed interest in their activism.

"We were able to identify him this morning," Ferrer said, adding that two of his colleagues were trying to contact Carrion's family. Ferrer said Carrion was being held at the Versalles police station in the city. It was not clear if he had been charged with any crime.

The government has had no comment, but a spokesperson for Benedict said the pontiff was aware of the incident and concerned about the man's welfare.

"There was contact made to be informed about the person and his situation," the Rev. Federico Lombardi told journalists before the pope's departure Wednesday. "The interest was there and was manifested."

Benedict met with Cuban President Raul Castro and his brother Fidel during the three-day trip. He denounced the country's Marxist system as outmoded ahead of his arrival, and used homilies and speeches to urge greater freedom. He also criticized the 50-year-old U.S. economic embargo, which he said had caused unnecessary suffering.

The Santiago protester's identity had been a mystery to leading members of the island's small dissident community, with some taking to Twitter to try to find out more about him.

Elizardo Sanchez, who monitors human rights on the island and acts as a de facto spokesman for the opposition, said he had no idea who the man was. Cuba considers all the dissidents to be mercenaries paid by Washington to stir up trouble.

(AP) ? James Arruda Henry had plenty to be proud of as a lobster boat captain who managed to build his own house and raise a family. But he kept a secret into his 90s, one that forced him to bluff his way through life by day and brought tears at night.

Henry was illiterate. He couldn't even read restaurant menus; he'd wait for someone else to place an order and get the same food. Sometimes he'd go hungry rather than ask for help. Most of his family was none the wiser.

Now he's 98, and his self-published collection of autobiographical essays is being read in elementary schools. "In A Fisherman's Language" details his barefoot beginnings in Portugal, life in a tenement in Rhode Island, boxing as a young man and his adventures at sea.

"I didn't think it was going to go too far," Henry told The Associated Press in a phone interview this week from his home in the Connecticut seaport of Mystic. "I couldn't read or nothing. I tell you, it makes me a very, very happy man to have people call me and write me letters and stuff like that."

Henry said he was taken out of school around the third grade to go to work making concrete blocks, baking bread and doing other jobs. He recalls getting a dollar from his father on the Fourth of July.

"I was so happy that I went straight to the ice cream parlor," he writes in his book. "I got a glass of milk, a piece of apple pie, a dish of ice cream. After I finished eating I had just enough money to buy a small pack of firecrackers. I lit one and they all went off!!"

When he applied for his driver's license, all he could do was put down his name. When a friend told the inspector he was talking to a local "lobster king," Henry managed to take his road test without finishing the application.

Throughout his life, he yearned to read and write but never found the time or opportunity. His nephew, he said, made Henry write him a letter, which took him a month. He found inspiration in a book about the grandson of a slave who became literate at 98. His granddaughter had read him an excerpt of the book, "Life is So Good" by George Dawson.

"I said if he can do it, I can do it," Henry said. "That's when I started to learn."

Henry would stay up until midnight trying to make sense of words. Sometimes he'd fall asleep, the book crashing to the floor.

"That was my job, trying to break the words up," he said. "A lot of nights I cried because I couldn't pronounce the word or know what it meant."

Henry at first practiced the alphabet on his own and relied on a children's dictionary before turning to relatives and tutors for help, granddaughter Marlisa McLaughlin said.

Henry was reading slowly when he approached Mark Hogan, a 69-year-old literacy volunteer, for tutoring in 2010. He said Henry was the one who brought up the idea of a book.

"This has blown me away," Hogan said. "It's been a rewarding experience for me, too. I guess I'm more content with my advancing age when I see what he could do with his."

A granddaughter, Alicia Smith, had the idea of sending the book on a cross-country journey as a literary chain letter of sorts, great-granddaughter Maxine Smith said. A copy started its trip at an elementary school in Connecticut and is heading off Friday to one in Berkeley, Calif.

It has sold 3,000 copies since its publication in November. It's available on Kindle, and Henry plans to send a copy to the White House in the hopes that President Barack Obama will sign it. (No word yet from the White House.) One of the more emotional stories describes Henry's sorrow after his cousin fell overboard and drowned during a fishing run.

"I stayed in bed for at least three weeks," Henry writes in his book. "I just wanted to die myself. My wife kept telling me it wasn't my fault. I done the best I could to save him."

Henry ? who had two daughters with his wife, Jean, who died in 2005 ? now acts as a reading advocate for the young and old. He gives talks to students and this week plans to address an adult education convention in Mystic.

"Don't be afraid to go ahead and try," he said. "It's hard, but once you get the hang of it, you'll enjoy it."

Has global warming brought an early summer to the US?

North America has been experiencing unusual weather of late. After a mild winter over much of the continent, last week it experienced record-breaking summer-like conditions. In Canada, for instance, the thermometer in St John's, New Brunswick, hit 25.4 ?C on 21 March, smashing the previous record high for March of 17.5 ?C.

"We've never seen these kinds of temperatures before. It's quite remarkable," Dave Phillips, a senior climatologist at Environment Canada, a government agency, told local media.

"The duration, areal size, and intensity of the 'summer in March' heat wave are simply off-scale," says Jeff Masters of the Weather Underground. "The event ranks as one of North America's most extraordinary weather events in recorded history." New Scientist takes a closer look.

The "summer in March" is now coming to an end but what caused it?
Meteorologists have been pointing to two main factors. First, as pointed out by Masters, there was a big loop in the jet stream over the continent, funnelling warm air northwards from the Gulf of Mexico. This loop in the jet stream remained "stuck" in place for over a week, a phenomenon known as a blocking pattern.

And the second factor?
Phillips points out that air flowing northwards in the spring would normally be cooled as it passes over cold, snowy ground. But this year there is very little snow because of the mild winter and the air is hardly cooling at all.

So is there a link with global warming?
There may be. "Global warming boosts the probability of really extreme events, like the recent US heat wave, far more than it boosts more moderate events," point out climate scientists Stefan Rahmstorf and Dim Coumou in a blogpost on RealClimate.org.

How could global warming have produced an off-the-charts event like the "summer in March"?
Nobody can say for sure, but we can speculate. First, sea-surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico have been higher than normal in the past couple of months, due to global warming, which means the air flowing north would have been warmer to start with. That fits with global warming trends.

There is also some evidence that global warming is reducing the snowpack, at least in the western US.

Global warming may also have influenced the jet stream pattern. According to research published last week by Jennifer Francis of Rutgers University (Geophysical Research Letters, vol 39, L06801), the rapid warming in the Arctic is affecting atmospheric circulation further south, making weather patterns more persistent ? more blocking, in other words ? which makes some kinds of extreme weather, such as heatwaves, more likely.

So several different factors, each made more likely by global warming, combined to produce this very extreme event?
Possibly. "I think [that is] right but it is hard to prove," said Kevin Trenberth of the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, when New Scientist asked him about this. Masters, meanwhile, described the idea as "entirely plausible".

Does this mean more extremely warm springs are likely?
Not necessarily. The confluence of events that caused the "summer in March" might still be exceedingly rare, even if the odds of such an event occurring are much higher than before. Again, nobody really knows. Masters says more detailed climate models are needed to track synergistic effects and anticipate extreme events such as this. However, the "summer in March" is cause for concern.

In 2004, Paul Epstein of Harvard Medical School's Centre for Health and the Global Environment, and James McCarthy of Harvard University, claimed: "We are already observing signs of instability within the climate system [...] there is no assurance that the rate of greenhouse gas build up will not force the system to oscillate erratically and yield significant and punishing surprises."

As Masters notes, significant and punishing surprises are exactly what we have been seeing in the US and elsewhere recently. And if such an "off the chart" event can occur when the world has warmed by less than 1 ?C, what sort of extreme events will occur by 2050, when the planet could be as much as 3 ?C hotter?

FTC, RockYou settle over exposed email passwords

(AP) ? The Federal Trade Commission says that an online game site called RockYou has reached a settlement with the government over a hacking attack that exposed email addresses and passwords from 32 million users.

The FTC said Tuesday that RockYou also violated online privacy rules covering children. The agency says the company collected email addresses and other information from about 179,000 children without parental consent.

RockYou CEO Lisa Marino says the events that led to the FTC's complaints took place more than two years ago. She says the company has long since removed the features that led to the investigation.

The settlement requires RockYou to implement a data security program and carries a fine of $250,000. RockYou develops social games. Its titles include "Gourmet Ranch" and "Zoo World."

This makes it more convenient for patients to request either copies of their medical records or discharge instructions, while making the request fulfillment process more efficient and seamless for the healthcare provider.

The iRequest application was built to supplement IOD?s ONC-ATB certification by providing a tech-friendly means for patients to request their medical records electronically via IOD?s patient portal. The application is well-aligned with the growing adoption of consumer technology in the healthcare segment, and deploys secure e-signing technology using a stylus directly on the iPad. Requestors must also produce a photo ID that is captured using the iPad camera to ensure the authenticity of the patient?s signature and protect patient privacy. Upon submission of the request, an order is automatically created in PRISM, IOD?s Web-based ROI management, tracking and reporting software, and an e-mail is sent to notify the requestor that records are ready to retrieve from IOD?s eDelivery portal.

Family Files Suit Against Illinois Nursing Home Claiming Falls Led to ...

Posted by: Briskman Briskman & Greenberg

Carl Bonner Sr. went to the Granite Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in January of 2010 with a brain injury that caused him to lose his balance and fall. When he died eight months later of head injuries he sustained from repeated falls at the nursing home, his family filed a wrongful death suit with the Madison County Circuit Court against his caregivers.

The complaint accuses the Granite City nursing home of failing to properly care for Bonner Sr. by allowing him to fall multiple times. Meredith Bonner is the executor of Bonner Sr.?s estate and she filed the wrongful death lawsuit. She claims the staff was made aware of Bonner Sr.?s falling issues since he sustained brain trauma in a fall. Following his initial injury, Bonner Sr. fell frequently.

In the claim, Meredith Bonner asserts that the staff and management at the nursing home knew Bonner Sr. had a high likelihood of falling again, but did not provide him proper assistance and supervision. As a result, Bonner Sr. fell repeatedly while at the nursing home, according to the complaint. In July of 2010, just six months after arriving at Granite Nursing Home, Bonner Sr. suffered a severe head injury in a fall and was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center.

Blunt force trauma to Bonner Sr.?s head while in the care of the nursing home led to swelling and bleeding in his brain, according to the complaint. He died in the hospital in early August. Meredith Bonner asserts in the complaint that it was the nursing home?s carelessness and negligence that led to Bonner Sr.?s death.

She claims the nursing home did not keep close enough watch on Bonner Sr. and failed to notice his injuries or treat them in a timely manner. Meredith Bonner expected more from the Granite City Nursing Home. She expected the staff would listen to her family as they explained Bonner Sr.?s abilities and challenges. She expected the staff to do their own analysis of Bonner Sr.?s needs and then meet those needs. She expected the home to care for Bonner Sr. and instead she claims their negligence led to his death.

Medical and legal professionals suggest thoroughly understanding what the nursing home offers and to set expectations in writing. Different elder care companies offer various levels of health care and observation of clients. Families leaving loved ones in the care of a professional elder care home need to understand the nursing home option they have chosen and what it offers.

Families with loved ones who have been injured or neglected have a right to seek compensation for health care costs and lost wages because of time spent addressing the home?s neglect.

Tablet gaming showdown: New iPad vs. Asus Transformer Prime

11 hrs.

via Ingame

Stay up to speed with news and reviews on video games for the PC, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, Android, iPhone, iPad, Facebook and more.

When Apple announced the new iPad earlier this month, CEO Tim Cook claimed that the new iPad?s new A5X chip offers four times the performance of Nvidia?s quad-core Tegra 3 CPU. ?Now that the new iPad has hit the street, we?ve been able to compare its performance to that of an?Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, the first?tablet?with a Tegra 3 inside. The results may surprise you.

GLBenchmark 2.1
In GLBenchmark 2.1, ?one of the few benchmarks that has versions for both Android and iOS, the new iPad scored higher. On the program?s Egypt Standard test, which shows a 3-D animation of ancient Egypt, the new iPad and its A5X chip processed 6718 frames at a rate of 60 frames-per-second to the Transformer Prime?s 5,939 frames at 53 fps.?

When GLBenchmark ran the Geometric test (vertex weighted), which measures low-level shader performance, the new iPad processed?7,530,524 frames at a rate of 57 fps while the Tegra 3-based Transformer Prime processed just?3,523,926 at a rate of 27 fps. We saw the same trend on the program?s Fill test, which measures texturing speed, as the iPad processed?1.98 billion textels per second to the Prime?s 404.61 million.

Geekbench
On Geekbench, a cross-platform benchmark that measures raw processing power rather than graphics, the quad-core Tegra 3 blew its competitor way as it achieved an overall score of 1,571 to the A5X?s 692. On the integer (1391 to 614), floating point (2408 to 825) and memory subtests (1076 to 784) , the Tegra 3 dominated, but the A5X bested it by a small margin of 324 to 266 on the stream subtest.

Browser Benchmarks: Peacekeeper and Sunspider
We also tested the new iPad?s Safari browser performance on two synthetic benchmarks and compared the results to those on the Transformer Prime?s stock Android browser. In Peacekeeper, a general-purpose browser benchmark, the two tablets got nearly identical scores of 386 for the iPad and 387 for the Prime.?However, the iPad completed the Sunspider JavaScript rendering test in just 1810 milliseconds to the Prime?s 2216 ms.?

Unfortunately, since the two tablets use two different browsers, it?s impossible to isolate the processor?s role in giving the iPad slightly faster Sunspider results. It?s quite possible that Safari just performs better on this test than the Android 4.0 browser does.

Subjective Gaming Performance
Evaluating gaming performance on any tablet is a mainly subjective task, because there?s no benchmark that measures framerates like FRAPs does in Windows. However, we attempted to see what the differences in appearance were when we played the same game on both devices and placed them side by side.?

When we fired up the jet ski racing game "Riptide GP" on both devices, we noticed immediately that images looked sharper and more colorful on the new iPad?s retina display. Edges of objects like our avatar?s ski jacket, the walls on the racing course, and the writing on the scoreboard looked so much crisper on the iPad?s 2048 x 1536 screen and colors just popped a lot more than on the Transformer?s 1280 x 800 display. The difference in screen quality was only a little less pronounced when we played the third-person shooter game "Shadowgun."

However, when we looked past the beautiful screen, we noticed that the version of the game playing on the Transformer Prime had some additional visual effects that were not present on the new iPad. ?In "Riptide," we noticed more reflections in the water and a splashing effect that made it look like water was hitting the screen when our ski landed from a jump. On the iPad, we just saw a little foam appear on landing, not splashes.

In "Shadowgun," we walked into a scene with a burning helicopter and, on both devices, saw gorgeous billows of smoke and fire rising up to the sky. However, only on the Tegra 3-powered Transformer Prime did the game show two flags billowing in the wind; the flags weren?t even there on the iPad version.

Our experience playing "Shadowgun" and "Riptide" on the two tablets shows how difficult it is to separate processor performance from other system components like the screen. It?s likely that, if we could put a gorgeous 2048 x 1536 screen on the Transformer Prime, these games would have both the great special effects and the sharp, beautiful images.

However, comparing tablet-to-tablet rather than chip-to-chip, the iPad?s screen makes the gaming experience a much tastier visual feast than you get on the Transformer Prime. We hope that upcoming higher-res Android tablets like the 1920 x 1200 screened Transformer Prime TF701 will give mobile gamers the perfect combination of special effects and sharp, vibrant images.

It is also possible that, once developers rework their games for the new iPad?s A5X chip, we?ll see the same kind of added special effects that we see with Tegra 3. Neither "Shadowgun" nor "Riptide" has yet been optimized for the A5X chip, so who knows what they will look like in their next iOS iterations. For now, its clear that the A5X offers better benchmark performance, while Tegra 3-optimized games offer more and better visual effects.?

Easy No Loan Home Improvements ? Do-It-Yourself For Little Or No ...

You can do great things to your house and keep it within your budget. So many people think that loans are required whenever you want to do any sort of home improvement but that simply is not the case. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish without expending a lot of your hard earned money. It is true that oftentimes it is the minimal things you can change in your home that will have the biggest impact. Here are some examples of inexpensive home improvement projects that arent that expensive.

Do you want new floors? Here are some things to think about. You might be thinking about all of the money youll be spending on contractors that will do your flooring. The good news is that you do not have to do this anymore. At a fraction of the cost, you can get laminate flooring which will appear to be hardwood flooring that you had professionally installed. Completing this job is easy even if you have no experience. When you use this flooring, you will see how easy it is to install. Work with an expert at your home improvement store to pick the best option for your home.

In your house, do you have hardwood floors? Using carpet, instead of a hardwood floor, might be better for your home. Your home might have carpeted floors already. Instead of carpet, you might want to think about installing tile or laminate flooring. These are projects that shouldnt take more than a weekend to complete (unless you have an extra large home of course). If you know how to rip up old carpet, you can put your flooring down in no time at all. Carpet isnt easy to install if you choose to go that way. Talk to a professional to make sure that you arent biting off more than you can chew with your project and then get to work!

Find out how to do some landscaping on your own.

Upgrading your home does not just take place on the inside only. You need to remember your yard and the space on the outer portions of your home too. Instead of a pricey landscape specialist; save some money and do it yourself. When you are able to get out and work around the outside of the house, it can have a comforting influence. Once you have finished developing your garden or yard all on your own; when you stand back at look at your work you will have a great sense of satisfaction. Imagine what a great feeling that will be!

Even if youre on a tight budget, you can do a home improvement project with no problem at all. Installing appliances yourself or doing some of the work will save on the overall costs. Instead of doing large renovations, you might want to do smaller ones, especially ones that you can do all the work yourself. Your home will have a different feel altogether once you are done with your small home improvement projects. Go to it!

Most of the money that you pay into home improvement projects is hiring people to do the work. Never spend too much money on any project for your home. Whether you decide to rearrange your furniture to make your rooms look new, or add on a new room to make your house look different, it is completely up to you. There is no need to spend a ridiculous sum of money to make your house look better ? think about it thoroughly before you make any decision at all. Several Green Tea Powder Benefits | Anyameten

Green tea is now available in varied forms, brands and kinds. Corporations and makers have found some ways to promote the product further by providing so many names and sub-varieties, each having its very own distinct taste, flavor and mixes. Green tea is available in tea bags, loose tea leaves cans, powder form, capsules, capsules, pills and liquid form. Green tea powder benefits are basically many and this particular form is also favored by conventional tea makers. These are some details about the blend and drink.

Making Green Tea Powder

Green tea powder is manufactured by squashing and grinding green tea leaves till it becomes fine powder. The powder can then be mixed with hot water to make green tea drinks or added as a element for making other products like ice cream, jelly, candy and a selection of food dishes. The powder can also be made of other parts of the green tea plant like the buds, petals, flowers, stems and roots. The efficiency and virility of green tea powder is less compared to whole tea leaves but people can still get a lot of the required catechins, polyphenols and caffeine. There are decaffeinated powders too.

Tea powder benefits are still extremely much the same as the drink or whole tea leaves. People usually buy the powder as an alternative choice to tea bags or loose tea leaves if they wish to drink but don't have the time or tools to steep tea for a short while. Need to place one small spoon or the minimum commended amount into a cup, pour hot water over it and then stir. The drink will be ready in less than a minute. The powder is also favored by many because it can be blended with other ingredients to make special drinks like green tea latte, iced tea, shakes and smoothies.

The Known Benefits

Tea powder benefits are common. Folks consume it on a regular basis to prevent infection and augment the immune system, the cleanse and purify the body, to improve concentration, focus and alertness, to extend energy and strength, to improve blood flow, to reduce body weight, blood pressure and heart rate, to boost body systems and organs like the kidneys, liver, heart and blood vessels or to enjoy the taste and flavor. Green tea also has caffeine but in less amounts matched against coffee or caffeine pills. The product can be bought from many healthfood shops and on the internet.

About Matcha

Matcha is the normal Japanese powdered tea. The word means ?powdered tea? and is made from ground young and well-grown green tea departs at the right season. Matcha is the sort of tea used in the Japanese tea ceremony and is highly favoured by tea fans all over the globe. There are way more benefits of green tea powder in matcha matched against soaking tea bags then drinking. The powder has more of the catechins, nutrient elements and caffeine that folks look for in conventional drinks. Bear in mind that the quantity and quality of these necessary elements will differ dependent on the brand and source. Patrons must be certain that they only purchase from valid and credible manufacturers which make premium matcha using the very best ingredients and the most stringent processes. Because the insoluble elements of the tea leaves contain several carbohydrates, proteins and fiber, consuming green tea powder will render extra benefits because these precise components are crushed and ground together when making the product.

Consuming More Green Tea Powder

A small spoon of good quality green tea powder is equivalent to about three diffuses of green tea leaves. Folk are advised to drink 1 to 3 cups of green tea powder each day to get the maximum health benefits. Benefits of powder green tea also revolve around its detox effects. Folks can go on detoxification diets using green tea as the main product or ingredient since it can be added to different types of food and drinks. Green tea powder is rich in anti-oxidants which effectively cleanses the body system and gets rid of dangerous agents that can lead to cardiovascular illness, cancer, diabetes and several psychological illnesses like Parkinson?s Disease and Alzheimer?s Disease.

(AP) ? A Florida man has agreed to plead guilty to hacking into the email accounts of celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Mila Kunis and Scarlett Johansson, whose nude photos eventually landed on the Internet, according to court documents filed Thursday.

Christopher Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, Fla., will plead guilty Monday in Los Angeles federal court to nine felony counts, including unauthorized access to a computer and wiretapping, the documents say. He faces up to 60 years in prison.

Defense attorney Christopher Chestnut said Thursday night that he is still working with prosecutors and wouldn't confirm the number of felony counts Chaney will plead guilty to.

"To date, Chris has been very cooperative with prosecutors, he's remorseful for any of the harm caused to the stars, and just looks to a resolution of the case," Chestnut said.

Chaney was arrested in October as part of a yearlong investigation of celebrity hacking that authorities dubbed "Operation Hackerazzi."

Prosecutors said Chaney hacked into the email accounts of more than 50 people in the entertainment industry, including Aguilera and Johansson. Nude photos Johansson had taken of herself were later posted on the Internet. Aguilera also had private photos put online, court documents show.

Johansson told Vanity Fair for its December issue that the photos were meant for Ryan Reynolds, who is now her ex-husband.

Chaney mined through publicly available data to figure out password and security questions for celebrity accounts. He hijacked a forwarding feature so that a copy of every email a celebrity received was sent to an account he controlled, according to court documents.

Chaney said he managed to hack into Johansson's email account to send one of her acquaintances an email containing a nude photo of her in exchange for a photo, authorities said.

A search warrant unsealed and obtained by The Associated Press said Chaney's computer hard drive contained numerous private celebrity photos and a document that compiled their extensive personal data.

Chaney forwarded many of the photographs to two gossip websites and another hacker, but there wasn't any evidence that he profited from his scheme, authorities said. He has since apologized for his actions.

Famous rock climber to share stories in Orono ? Outdoors ...

Renowned rock climber Beth Rodden will travel to Maine to share a film and tell stories over dinner at the University of Maine in Orono. The event, 6-9 p.m. April 13, will benefit the new Bangor Y Outdoor Adventure Club. Ticket prices and the exact location will be announced soon on her Facebook page. Find it by visiting Facebook and searching for ?Dinner and a Movie with Beth Rodden.?

?[Rodden] is about as well known as you can get in the climbing community,? said Jeremy Robichaud, leader of the outdoor club?s rock climbing program. ?There are the bigtime legends who almost everyone has heard about ? like you may have heard of Lynn Hill. But Beth is right up there, maybe just a minor notch below that ? She broke a lot of standards for females as far as climbing difficulty. If she?s not the queen, she?s the princess.?

Established by the Bangor Y and University of Maine in February, the outdoor club will provide low-cost outdoor recreation training and trips to area residents. The current programs, rock climbing and paddling, have already proved to be popular programs and in high demand in the community. In fact, the club is working to form a third rock climbing group to satisfy a growing waiting list.

?We run in the gamut ? we have kids as young as 11 and folks that are senior citizens,? Robichaud said of the rock climbing program. ?The median age is 36. We have total greenhorns, who have never seen a climbing rope to a one particular guy who has been climbing for 30 years and moved up to Maine.?

All proceeds from the upcoming event with Rodden will go toward purchasing club equipment and travel expenses for the paddling and climbing tracks, as well as other programs, such as mountain biking, that club organizers hope to add in the near future.

Rodden, now 31, made climbing history in 1998, when she became the youngest woman to climb a 5.14a grade route, ?To Bolt or Not to Be? in Oregon, the first of its grade established in the United States. Since then, she has completed numerous 5.13 and 5.14 ascents.

Rock climbing grades accurately describe the degree of difficulty and danger for specific routes, although the grading system can be confusing and differs from country to country. In the US, climbs are rated from 5.1 to 5.15a, with 5.1 being the easiest. Difficulty also increases from ?a? to ?d.?

She was a part of the first all-women team to ascend Tsaranro Massif in Madagascar. She was also the first woman to free climb two El Capitan routes in Yosemite Valley. And just four years ago, she redpointed the first ascent of Meltdown in Yosemite Valley (5.14c), the hardest traditional route led or established by a woman as of 2008.

On March 14, Rodden called from her home in the California Bay Area for a phone interview.

Sarnacki: In the climbing world, what would you say you?re best known for?

Rodden: I?m probably best known for crack climbing, I would say ? and climbing in Yosemite.

S: How did you first started climbing?

R: I was 13 or 14 when I started climbing. I just went to a climbing gym one day actually, and I was hooked. So I started doing competitions a couple months after that and I just got completely hooked on the sport. (She was living in Sacramento, Calif. at the time, and the gym she?s referring to is The Rocknasium in Davis, Calif.)

S: What are you doing today in your career?

R: I?m still climbing a ton, traveling a lot, working with my sponsors on product development and doing clinics and stuff for them ? pretty much the same old, same old, which is kind of awesome.

S: Have you ever visited Maine before?

R: Yes, but not for a really long time ? probably like 10 or 15 years. I was visiting friends who lived in Portland. (She has never climbed in Maine and hopes to check out some local routes after the event.)

S: So far, what has been the most meaningful route for you?

R: The nose of El Cap is probably one of the most meaningful, I?d say. It was first free climbed by Lynn Hill (in 1994), who is kind of a legend in climbing. She climbed it the year I started climbing, so it was always this kind of idealistic accomplishment that I?d love to try some day. Finally, I did it, about 10 years later (2005). It was great.

S: Do you have any advice for people who are looking to become better climbers and try more challenging routes? What has always helped you be successful?

R: Probably a few things. Honestly, one is just climbing as much as you can. I know it sounds kind of obvious, but the more you climb, the more you learn. Also, surround yourself with people you can always learn from. When I was a kid, I?d always climb with the owners of the gym and adults ? Ask a ton of questions, especially when you go outside and there?s a lot more logistics involved. I still do that when I go climbing with people. That?s probably my biggest piece of advice ? And obviously, as with anything, it?s good to be able to work on your weaknesses. I personally think the gym is a great place to improve. It doesn?t directly correspond with outdoor climbing, but it?s a good, convenient place to learn.

S: As an athlete, what is the most appealing aspect of your sport? What do you look forward to most?

R: I think I look forward to spending time with friends in a new place, honestly. That?s one of the best things about climbing ? you get to travel a lot with your friends to pretty cool places and do something that you all really like to do.

S: Do you have any advice specific to women who are looking to get into climbing or become better climbers?

R: I think it?s a great sport for women to do because I think there?s a big misconception that it?s all about arm strength, but I?d say it?s equally about technique and balance, which I think women are inherently better at. And I also think it?s a great way to go do something with your girlfriends. I go climbing all the time with a group of ladies and it?s a really fun way to interact. It may seem like a really macho sport, but a lot of women out there are doing stuff right alongside the men.

S: A less serious question: For the event, do you have any favorite food you hope will be served for dinner?

R: I don?t even know what?s being offered. I love food. I dunno, maybe some seasonal Maine things. That would be awesome. I love to cook, but I wouldn?t say I?m very good at it.

S: I noticed your blog ( blog.bethrodden.com) is about cooking and climbing. When and why did you start that up?

R: I started that about a year ago. I think I had a few friends that had blogs about food and their kids and other friends of mine that had blogs about their climbing, so I thought it would be a cool thing to do, and I definitely enjoy writing. I find it a big challenge for myself and I really like that. I?m trying to learn how to become a better writer.

S: For these types of events, when you tell people your stories and show your film, do you consider yourself to be a very talkative person?

R: I think I?m inherently kind of a shy person, but I do really good with questions. I really like sharing my experiences because I know when I first started climbing, and still to this day I go to as many slideshows as I can. I am really inspired by people?s travels and their stories.

Sponsors for the Orono event with Rodden are Cadillac Mountain Sports, Acadia Mountain Guides, Alpenglow, NH Bragg and Thrive Climbing team.
